About the course

Japanese Calligraphy

In this nine-session course, students will enjoy learning calligraphy from the basics to creating their own finished works.While studying the history of calligraphy and how to use its traditional tools, participants will gradually discover and shape their personal expression. The course concludes with a final presentation and sharing of each student’s completed work, which they can take home and display. It is recommended for anyone interested in Japanese culture or looking to begin calligraphy as a new creative pursuit.

Kyoko Imai

Kyoko Imai is a Tokyo-based calligrapher.She is Vice Director of the Gennichi Shodokai, founding member of the Interior Calligraphy Exhibition, and director of Koushokai. Her works have been exhibited widely in Japan and abroad, including invitations to the Seoul Biennale and the Seoul Calligraphy Festival. Dedicated to promoting calligraphy through teaching and exhibitions, she shares the art’s depth and joy with many. Imai also engages in the cultural promotion of Nishijima washi paper in Yamanashi, pursuing a contemporary expression that bridges tradition and modern life.She holds regular classes every month at Ozuwashi (Nihonbashi), Yotsuya, and online.
